American Family Day originated in Arizona back in 1978, but word of this special time has since spread throughout the United States. Some organizations are working towards turning the first Sunday in August into a nationally recognized holiday, and they are calling for people from every part of the country to help make this a reality. Their mission involves preserving traditional family values, and they hope to remind people about the importance of a solid family structure for young and old alike.

One of the goals behind turning American Family Day into a national holiday includes making sure it does not become too commercialized. To accomplish this, several suggestions have been made on how to commemorate this day, including making small gifts for family members, drawing them personal pictures or sending a free ECard. People are encouraged to get creative, so you and your family can decide how you prefer to recognize this special event.

The first Sunday in August is also Friendship Day! This occasion has been recognized on a national level since 1935, and many other counties have since adopted the idea. Get ready to celebrate your friends on August 2nd!  Proclaimed by Congress in 1935 to be the every first Sunday in August, National Friendship Day has been adopted by other countries around the world as well.  On Sunday, we can take the time to recognize friends, past and present, who’ve helped us through the hard times, come over to celebrate the good times, or just “showed up” big time whenever they felt like we needed it.

Looking back, I see how life changes have affected my relationships.  Dear friends from a place I lived briefly have completely fallen out of my life, but I cherish the time I shared with them.  I have some family members who are as dear to me as friends who I know will be with me for life even if I rarely see them.  I have friends I’ve shared fun and intimate moments with who live too far to visit as often as we’d like.  Then there are the new friendships, neighbors and church friends, who are getting closer little by little.  Finally, there are my online friends.  I have a lot of these, and it’s amazing how when you lose touch with them, it all rushes back the minute you reconnect – usually by providence!

I used to think of friendship in terms of what I could get, and I’ve tried to make friends based on what I can give. In the end, though, friendship takes time, trust, shared experiences, and a delicate balance of give and take. I’m hoping now to grow some of my new friendships into something deep, meaningful and lasting, but many of them are still at that awkward point where you’re not sure how soon to say or do what.  In the meantime, here are some ways we can all celebrate Friendship Day this Sunday:

Throw a potluck party and invite the block. Trust me, they’ll love you and you’ll have a great time.

Pick up the phone.  It’s a great time to call that friend you’ve lost touch with.

Send an e-card.  For the friends you can’t phone, such as those serving overseas, let them know you are thinking of them and you miss them.

Surprise them with a gift. Doesn’t have to be big – bake some cookies, ship a book, send the latest photo of your kids.

Drag ‘em out of their house.  Some people are notorious for never taking breaks. If you have a friend like this, pull them out of the house for a cup of coffee, or better yet, a martini, or even still, a trip to the spa.

Put up a photo or a few words online.  Facebook, Webshots, Twitter, your blog – there’s a million online ways to reach out.

Help out a friend.  If they need a break, drive them to the movies and go clean their house or watch their kids. ‘Nuf said. (And this page of comments and photos to help a child like  Stellan in need proves that you can never underestimate the power of the web in helping out a new friend.)
