Karwa Chauth is a traditional Hindu and Barelvi festival of married women, and is celebrated in India and some parts of Pakistan.
Married women fast one whole day without food or water for the long life of their husbands. The ritual signifies extreme love and devotion to the husband, as evidenced by the wife’s willingness to suffer for his well being.
ORIGIN AND SIGNIFICANCE
Karwa Chauth is a festival that provides an opportunity for all married women to get close to their in-laws. All married women observes fast that ensures the well-being, prosperity and longevity of their husbands. This Hindu festival has a cultural and social significance and all Indians celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm.
City ‘mandirs’ in Saddar’s Bhoosa Mandi, Bagh Sardaran, Kartarpura, Lalkurti, Graci Lane, Purana Qila, Gawalmandi and Kabari Bazaar likely to filled with Hindu ‘yatrees’ celebrating ‘karwa chauth’ in a pompous fashion. Hindu men, women and children wore festive clothes and various traditional dishes may prepared on the occasion.
‘karwa chauth’ is a famous Hindu festival celebrated once a year in which married women observe fast for the whole day. “They stop eating and drinking at ‘sehri’ till the time the moon appears on the sky and break their ‘varath’ by eating something from their husband’s hands or otherwise remain hungry.
That women who observe the fast pray for the well being of their ‘pariwar’ (family), particularly for their husbands’ long life. After their ‘varath’ ends, they are showered with gifts from their husbands.
All married women are not supposed to eat anything without seeing the moon, as it will nullify our ‘varath’.
