One of the majority stunning meteor showers, 13 December 2011 dazzling Bright display in the Night Sky. Geminids produce up to 60 shooting stars.

This year, unfortunately the shower will be happening during the time of a fading gibbous moon, which beautiful much will hush up all but the brightest meteors.

Meteors are amazing streaks of light that unexpectedly come into view in the sky when a dust particle from outer space evaporates high in the Earth”s atmosphere.

As the point of origin of the shower lies in the direction of the group of Gemini, they have been named Geminids. The source of the meteor shower is not a comet but a rocky asteroid named 3200 Phaethon, which is in a highly elliptical 1.4 year orbit.

The best time to view these multi-coloured bright, medium-speed meteors in the gripping night skies will be from 10:05 PM to midnight in the eastern horizon the Geminids will be falling most richly on the nights of Tuesday, December 13, and Wednesday, December 14.

According to the source C B Devgun Science Popularization Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) President said that “Astro lovers are expected to see shooting stars whizzing past in the skies as the Geminid meteor showers will be seen on the night of December 14 and 15”.

The ZHR (Zenithal Hourly Rate which is a measure of how many meteors one can see in an hour) for Geminids is about 50-100, which is quite high, he said.

The light phenomenon in the atmosphere is called a “meteor”, while the dust particle is called a “meteoroid”. When the number of meteors is large, it is called a meteor shower or meteor storm. The shower always happen on a particular day or a time period as it is associated usually with comets, Devgun said.

To see the maximum shooting stars the area should have minimum light pollution, Devgun said, adding the best time would be around midnight above the horizon towards the East. The showers can be seen with a naked eye and no help is required provided the sky is clear and not misty.

India is famous for its cultures and traditions. This is the country which is well known for its various festivals. One of the most looked-for festivals in 2011 is the karva chauth in 2012 on 2nd November. Karva chauth is celebrated by the married woman in order to pray for the long life and life long wellness of their husbands.

On the karwa chauth date, the women carry out fast. This is not an ordinary fast where only food is forbidden. The women undergo a fast in which water is also banned. Most of the other fasts allow the use of water. The karva chauth represents the enormous sacrifice of married Indian women for their husbands.

On the day of karva chauth, the women wake up early in the morning before the sun rise. They get ready to conduct the karva chauth puja. They eat the food specially meant for the festival. This food is normally termed as the sargi. Sargi is an important part of this pre-dawn meal, and always includes fenia. It is traditional for the sargi to be sent or given to the woman by her mother-in-law. The women drink water in the morning and after that they don’t eat or drink throughout the day. The fast of karva chauth is not forced on anybody; all the married women wish to do it for the wellness of their husbands.

Karva Chauth an idol of Gaur Mata was made a statue using earth and cow dung, which has now been replaced with an idol of Parvati and decorates them with colourful and bright clothes and jewellery. In the evening, the women get together for the karva chauth puja. Usually the women collect in a temple and do the puja. In the puja they listen to the karva chauth katha. Each fasting woman lights an earthen lamp in her thali while listening to the Karva story. The karva chauth katha is basically the story behind the celebration of the festival.

Women sit in a circle with their puja thalis. Depending on region and community, a version of the story of Karva Chauth is narrated, with regular pauses. The storyteller is usually an older woman or a priest, if one is present. In the pauses, the Karva Chauth puja song is sung collectively by the women as they perform the feris (passing their thalis around in the circle). The fera ceremony concluded, the women await the rising of the moon.

After when the moon appears, the women conduct the puja. Then the husband gives water to drink, this way the fast gets over. The huge sacrifice of women is well symbolized through this fast.

The women eagerly wait for the moon to be risen in the evening. Once the moon is visible, they worship the moon and their husband. They pray for the long life of their husbands. A fasting woman, with her husband nearby, to view its reflection in a vessel filled with water, through a strainer, or through the cloth of a dupatta. Water is offered (arka) to the moon to secure its blessings. A fasting Woman then turns to her husband and views his face indirectly in the same manner.

The husband now takes the water from the thali and gives his wife her first sip and feeds her with the first bit of the day (usually something sweet). The fast is now broken, and the woman has a complete meal.
